Welcome Back!!!

Hello North Schuylkill Elementary!!

My name is Mrs. Zink (formerly Miss McDonald) and I am a new addition to the North Schuylkill Elementary Staff after teaching two years at the Jr/Sr High School. I am thrilled to be here at the Elementary and am extremely excited for a great year teaching K-6 Art!

Each week I will update my blog with information regarding what each grade is learning about or creating. I will also post images of student work as the year goes on.

Below you will find a copy of the parent letter I will be sending home this week. Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns!

Parents/Guardians:
My name is Mrs. Zink and I am pleased to be your son/daughter's art teacher this year at North Schuylkill Elementary. I look forward to a rewarding year! I am a 2008 graduate of Kutztown University with my Bachelor’s Degree in Art Education. I began teaching at North Schuylkill School District in 2010 and taught for two years at the Jr./Sr. High School and have now moved to the Elementary Building to teach K-6. I am thrilled to be teaching the Elementary age group and cannot wait to see what the students will create!

In order to ensure the best environment, students will be expected to follow these rules: be respectful, listen and follow directions, clean up after yourself. use materials and tools properly, and try your best!

In art class this year, your son/daughter will have the opportunity to explore exciting materials and techniques, along with learn about many interesting artists and art movements. To begin each art class, each student will complete a sketchbook assignment. They will be simple drawing exercises that will encourage creativity and get the student prepared to draw. Each student will also make a portfolio in which they will be keeping their artwork throughout each marking period. Students will also complete worksheets and activities in class that highlight important concepts and vocabulary that are taught throughout each unit of study. Students will then complete projects in which they will further apply knowledge and demonstrate techniques and concepts that have been taught.  In the higher grades the students will be given occasional quizzes that will assess each student’s grasp of the information.

I have high expectations for each student but I recognize that all of us learn, create, and express ideas in different ways. One of the main ideas that I will impress upon the students is to always “Try Your Best”. Each student is capable of creating successful, meaningful artwork, regardless of their artistic ability.
Each project will be graded using a rubric that will assess the following:
understanding of key concepts from throughout the lesson, craftsmanship and creativity, care and use of material, effort and participation, and behavior/ability to follow directions.

Each teacher produces a blog which is used to inform parents of homework assignments or information that is being covered in each class. My blog will hold information regarding what artists and concepts each class is learning about and what projects they are creating. My blog is updated weekly and can be reached from the North Schuylkill Home Page under Elementary Homework Helpline. My blog will also contain information about when your child’s class will be working with paint and other materials that are messy, so that your child may dress appropriately. My blog will also update you on the Elementary Art Show that will coincide with the Spring Concert this May.
I look forward to an exciting year and can’t wait to see the wonderful artwork that your child will create!
